What a Difference a Day Can Make.

What a difference a day can make. Oh so true. Just happened to my neighbor who thought she had a cold and heavy chest feeling. She went to her doctor and complained about the constant cough and was prescribed antibiotics. Doctors are trained to look for the horse and not the zebra…that’s actually taught at grants-zebramed school.  Only look more deeply if the patient keeps on coming back. In one of my progressive doctor’s office she had a small statue of a zebra.  I went to her once, then she moved to a small island off Maine. (sigh)

My neighbor’s course of antibiotic treatment didn’t help and different antibiotics were prescribed and more and more until her doctor ordered a chest X-ray, and you, the reader, have probably guessed this one already; lung cancer that already spread.  Prognosis, terrible.imaddasdasdges

Last night I was on Facebook when I received a DM from my other neighbor. “Did you hear about, Mary?” (Name changed for protection.) I grabbed my cell and called my messenger.  She told me the ugly details. Radiation, chemo, months to live. The family is crushed! (understatement)

A similar situation happened to a friend in Arizona. He was feeling well at Christmas and by the end of January he complained of problems swallowing. In a few more days it was disruptive enough to send him to his doctor who said he had to ween himself off blood thinners (heart related problems) before he could have an endoscope.  A few days later the test showed a large cancerous tumor. A month later, my friend passed away from esophageal cancer.  I didn’t even have time to bombard him with alternative treatments.

My friend and neighbor, L. said it best when she said, “What a difference a day makes.” It is so true, You are going along enjoying life and WHAM, life will never be the same.

Let’s look at the facts. Cancer rates are still growing and the treatment is pretty much the same: radiation and cancer.  Really?  All the money sent to the American Cancer Society for research and they haven’t found a better treatment option?

However, when I really look closely at the 2 lifestyles of the people I mentioned above, is it really that shocking that they both have/had rapidly spreading cancer? They both smoked cigarettes, ate a terrible diet, one drank to excess and both had other serious health issues before being diagnosed with CANCER.  It shouldn’t be a shock. Were they asking for it? Heck no!  They were just enjoying life and cigsliving it according to their terms. They never imagined that they would get a cancer diagnosis down the path of life.  But what they really hurt with their reckless lifestyle are their loved ones.  My neighbor has young daughters and a husband that depends on her. My Arizona friend leaves behind a wife that was hoping to enjoy retirement with him and children and grandchildren. He was a terrific man who I would always call when I was in a jam, and he would come to the rescue. I called him once from Florida to rescue my friends who broke down in their boat on an upstate NY lake and called me asking what should they do and help? I’ll call so and so….He always came through.

So, my best advice and the purpose of writing this post is, plan ahead. Start taking care of your body now while you still have good health and then maybe you will fight off colds, diseases and cancer. Do it now while you have control of your bodies.  I strongly recommend to start healing yourself now and don’t wait for the CANCER diagnose before you take proactive action. TAKE IT NOW!

Take a life lesson from the people I mentioned above. If not for you, then for people who love you and depend on you. You owe it to them!   Think what would happen if you were to get sick and leave this life too early?  Who would really suffer? Parents, friends, and children that depend on you?  When you look at it that way eating and having a lifestyle that is irresponsible is selfish!  That’s right, SELFISH!  Do you think so much of yourself and not of others that you can eat, drink, not exercise without consequences? GREEDY!

You owe it to your loved ones, yourself, your community and the world to be the BEST person possible and that comes with eating the greatest food for your body. It is also about setting a good example to people around you and to your children and grandchildren.

How to do this?

  • Eat raw vegetable when possible everyday…good way is through juicing.
  • Chose organic! (You think organic eating is expensive…wait until you pay for cancer treatments even with health insurance.)
  • Skip sugar (feeds cancer cells)
  • Don’t eat processed carbs
  • Gluten…not good for you
  • Nope on the alcohol.  I don’t care want they try to tell you on TV. Alcohol is poison.
  • Move it!  I love 10 minutes on a rebounder . Click here to see what it is. Click Here!
  • Drink lots of H20.
  • Skip all the stress. Take time to sit on a beach, read a fiction book, eat by candlelight.
  • Don’t eat red meat with added hormones, antibiotics, fed bad diets, slaughtered inhumanely with
    Don't eat me.
    Don’t eat me.

adrenaline rushing though their bodies…so BAD for you. Unless you hunt it yourself skip red meat.

In conclusion, the message here is take control of your own life through healthy living and hopefully live longer and happier.  Is eating healthy a guarantee that you will live longer? No. There is no guarantee in life but your chances improve greatly.

Plus:

  1. You look better!
  2. You feel better!
  3. You’re friends will like you more.
  4. You will inspire your friends and children.
  5. Less animals will have to die to support your diet.
  6. You will support organic farmers.
  7. Your skin will glow.
  8. You will just give the aura of good health to people around you.
    Stop this!
    Stop this!
  9. You will slow the aging process.
  10. You will look younger.
  11. Less colds.
  12. Better moods.
  13. Less headaches.
  14. That rash will go away.
  15. Better memory.
  16. Better eyesight.
  17. Stave off dementia.
  18. Wrinkle reducer.
  19. Your skin will be more elastic.
  20. What anxiety?

What a difference a day can make….It could be a good difference!!!  Think about that. To your health!

Day 24 – 30 Day juicing Challenge

Wednesday- Day 24

Old Faithful

Old Faithful

Yesterday I ate some bad things. Well, bad for me. I ate panna cotta (cooked cream) with strawberries and cottage cheese.Today I was hungry because my body got a taste of SUGAR.  I decided to fight back by juicing this morning and in the afternoon.  I had an appointment with a local artist to see if she wanted me to be her social media manager. I was very impressed with her art and we hit it off so yes, I have a new client.

Embarrassing but she made lunch and put out a good spread on the dining room table. She had nacho chips with homemade guacamole and fresh cut fruit. I declined all because I was juicing today, 100 percent.  I noticed that she had a ton of supplements on the counter and essential oils. Obviously she was indedfsfxconcerned about health but were the corn chips GMO free?  Were the peaches organic? Taking supplements is fine but what you are eating is also important. She also told me she just had a reverse osmosis water system put in and there was a man there repairing the system. She should test the water with a PH strip to see if it tests acid.  I understand that reverse osmosis can create water that is high is PH.

Well anyway, by the time I got home just before 4:00 I was starving and I have lots to eat in the refrigerator but I have the will-power now to skip the junk and go directly to juicing.

Today’s recipe:

  • Kale
  • Ginger
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Lemon

Day 21 – 30 Days Juice Challenge

Sunday, Day 21 of the 30 Days Juicing Challenge. Yea!  I’m feeling great but sadly, weigh loss some thing like 1 pound. You have got to be kidding?  I have whittled my calorie intake to a bare minimum and still the fat is clinging on me.  I sure my Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism plays a lot in the inability to lose weight. Dang. What to do?

What is Hashimoto’s Hypothyroidism? Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis is an autoimmune disease in which the thyroid gland is attacked by a variety of cell- and antibody-mediated immune processes. It was the first disease to be recognized as an autoimmune disease It was first described by the Japanese specialist Hakaru Hashimoto in Germany in 1912.

So, am I hungry everyday? Nope. The juice I make everyday does a great job of filling me up and giving me energy to take on the day.

Juicing is a simple and straight-forward way of consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables in an efficient, enjoyable way. As easy as it is to do, a few tips and guides never hurt anyone.

Here are some articles to read through while waiting for your juicer to arrive!

Why Juice?

You’ve heard the rave reviews about juicing and you want to know what all the hullabaloo is about. Is it fact or fiction?

Well, there’s a little bit of both. We love juicing. But we know that it is not a panacea. Learn more about the benefits of juicing and how to use juicing for health, not harm.

You can also read about my personal juicing journey here.

Which Fruits & Vegetables Can I Juice?

The short answer is: “Pretty much alllll of them! The more, the merrier!”

The more nuanced, more accurate answer is: “You can juice most produce, but some fruits and vegetables are unjuiceable.”

Even among the fruits and vegetables that can be juiced, it’s helpful to know which parts of a fruit or vegetable can be juiced. You’ll be surprised to find that you can juice a lot of parts that you typically can’t eat – another huge benefit of juicing!

Oh, you might also want to know about which fruits and veggies have edible, juiceable peels and which don’t!

What’s the Difference Between Juicing & Blending?

Some juicers are blenders too and it makes a lot of sense since blending lets you fill in the (nutritional) gaps that juicing leaves out and vice versa.

Learn about the difference between juicing and blending here and how they complement each other!

What is the Best Juicer to Buy?

Speaking of juicers – and blenders – it’s important that you choose the best juicer for your needs. Before rushing off to buy a juicer, take a moment and read through the different types of juicers and how they measure up.

Although there are juicers that are widely considered to be top-of-the-line, the best juicer for you is simply the juicer that best suits your juicing needs. Find out the 5 questions you should know the answers to before buying a juicer!

It’s pretty much the same deal with blenders – go with the blender that’s best for you.

What Fruits & Veggies are the BEST to Juice?

It’s hard to say which fruits and vegetables are the BEST. We can only repeat 3 good rules of thumb to follow when juicing:

1. Organic > Non-Organic: Organic fruits and vegetables better. Duh, you say – but they’re expensive. We know, and you don’t have to buy all organic

2. Vegetables > Fruits: Fruits juices are yummy, but vegetable juices are healthier than fruit juices. We recommend juicing mostly veggies and adding a little fruit for taste.

2. Diversity > Routine: One of the biggest benefits of juicing is that it allows you to consume a variety of fresh produce. Take advantage of it to supply your body with nutrients from foods you normally wouldn’t eat instead of sticking to the usual suspects all the time!

That being said, there are some foods that are a MUST in juicing.

How Long Does Fresh Juice Last?

This is an excellent – and important – question. Fresh juice is best-est when consumed fresh – and that means within 20 minutes of juicing. Busy schedules, however, often demand juice storage.

Although juice is best fresh, you can store fresh juice – and keep a lot of their nutritional benefits intact for up to 2 days.

Day 12 – 30 Day Juicing Challenge

20140221_102216 20140221_102351 20140221_102553Day 12 and feeling great!  Today I added some parsley to the mix and some tatsoi.  Tatsoi you say? That was a new one on me. I bought another Organic Girl box of greens and noticed that in the ingredients it reads:

Tangy red and green chard, hearty tat soi, peppery arugula and mild spinach. I looked up tatsoi (according to the Internet it is spelled tatsoi and not tat soi) and it is the new spinach.*

My recipe today consisted of:

  • Mixed greens
  • Parsley
  • Orange
  • Lemon
  • Apple
  • Celery
  • Carrots
  • Slice of ginger

Yesterday I picked up some turmeric supplement as it has some anti-inflammation properties. I am working on getting inflammation down in my body. I had a CRP (C-reactive protein)  test a few years ago and it was very high, showing inflammation throughout my body raising my chances for heart attack and cancer. Turmeric is important for an alkaline body which is a healthy body.

The medical community has established that an alkaline diet rich in plant foods is key to longevity, but maintaining an alkaline diet is increasingly difficult in modern western culture. Complex alkalizing minerals are contained in abundance in vegetables and a selection of fruits, yet convenience foods, soda, and excess proteins have replaced them. A whole cascade of health issues and degenerative disorders can be traced back to the excess acid caused by our changing habits. Bone loss, acidosis, gut issues, candida, cardiovascular concerns, inflammation, and accelerated aging are all connected to this phenomenon. Many doctors believe that an overly acidic system is a factor in cancer as well.

The good news is that we can do something about it; we can reverse the process and heal our bodies from a number of ailments in a matter of months. This is not a quick fix, and is a lifestyle commitment that requires some dedication. The following steps should help you on your way.

1. Increase your consumption of vegetables and fruits to 9 servings daily. Of the two, veggies are most important for bone building, and should include plenty of onions (these contain superior bone-building compounds), garlic, asparagus, kale, bok choy, endive, broccoli, cucumber, cabbage, collard greens, squash, sprouted seeds, sea vegetables, cress, leafy greens, and more. Wild edibles and grasses are also beneficial.

2. Eat root veggies and tubers: beets, carrots, yams, turnip, rutabaga, parsnip, radish, and burdock.

3. Eat fruits in moderation: avocados, tomatoes, grapefruit, limes, lemons, dried figs, watermelon, coconut, and ripe bananas are all beneficial. Dried prune plums are not alkaline but have a distinct benefit for bones and are therefore included on this list.

4. Eat grains in moderation, and concentrate on quinoa, millet, sprouted bread, and buckwheat. (Increase roots and tubers).

5. Reduce animal protein. Meat is highly acidic and should be consumed moderately or not at all. Choose fish and lamb over beef or chicken. Small amounts of goat or sheep milk may be tolerable.

6. Use olive, sesame, pumpkin, coconut, or flax oil.

7. Amongst the legumes, eat lima beans, white beans, and lentils. Fermented soy products such as tempeh or miso are good.

8. Nuts and Seeds: pumpkin, sesame and almond are best bets, along with fennel and cumin.

9. Increase your water consumption. Decrease or eliminate soda, coffee, processed juices, sports drinks, and alcohol.

10. Use plenty of herbs and spices in your cooking. Cinnamon, ginger, cardamom, curries, cayenne and all the green herbs are wonderful not just for flavor but to help our bodies detoxify. (source About.com)

Tatsoi (Brassica narinosa or Brassica rapa var. rosularis) (in Chinese, or ; and, inJapaneseタアサイ or 塌菜), also called Spinach mustardSpoon mustard, or Rosette bok choy, is an Asianvariety of Brassica rapa grown for greens. This plant has become popular in North American cuisine as well, and is now grown throughout the world.

The plant has dark green spoon-shaped leaves which form a thick rosette. It has a soft creamy texture and has a subtle yet distinctive flavour.

It can be grown to harvestable size in 45–50 days, and can withstand temperatures down to –10°C (15°F). Tatsoi can be harvested even from under the snow.

Day 10 – 30 Day Juicing Challenge

Wednesday. It was not a good day for me. I wasn’t feeling great and was experiencing a little body pain and sore throat. I dragged the extractor out and made a juice that was heavy on the cucumber and that upset my tummy. I burped through the rest of the day. I also had to handle some stressful situations between my mortgage company who says I don’t have a wind policy on one of the rental houses, but I do and they are charging me some outrageous amount for insurance, and my actually insurance broker is dragging her feet on fixing.the problem. So, I had to be on hold, on hold, and then send supporting emails out. Then I couldn’t find my new checks that I just received in the mail….it was chaotic. Typical stressful day where I would have liked to munch down a box of Girl Scout cookies, and what do I hear but the doorbell and there stands this adorable girl scout with the 2 boxes I ordered. Of course you have to buy from the neighbor’s kid.

I must admit, between the burps, i did manage to eat 4 cookies….the chocolate peanut butter kind. Good but not as good as I remembered.  So I am meh about it and the rest sits in a baggy in the refrigerator. What? Am I really losing my taste for fake, sugary food???

And by the way, I am only trying to be healthy not perfect.

I also think the Atkins bars that I am eating once a day are doing me no favors. When I eat one or two a day as a meal replacement or a snack, I don’t seem to lose any weight according to the bathroom scale. I think I’m going to pass those to my neighbor who loves them.

20140218_082021By the night, my throat was feeling sorer and I bought Chinese food for dinner. I had a couple of bites but it tasted bland and disgusting. My taste buds now demand better. After watching a little Sochi I took an Alka Seltzer Plus and went to bed. I woke up around 3:00 probably because of the cookies I ate as I have learned, sugar eaten later in the day will cause insomnia.

Today recipe:

  • Kale
  • Carrot
  • Celery
  • Cucmber
  • Snap peas
  • Apple
  • Slice of ginger
