Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer

Thyroid Cancer by Terry Ryan

Surprisingly, I have had 2 friends diagnosed with thyroid cancer this last month. Both are female and in their 50s. So, and of course, I had to research THYROID CANCER to find out what it is and what to do.

Thyroid cancer has doubled since the 70s. It is fifth in most diagnosed cancer in American women now. Yes, the word CANCER is always scary, it is a very treatable cancer when caught in the early stages.

  • Lump in the neck
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Pain in the throat
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Persistent cough

If you have any of the above symptoms, you should see your physician. It mostly likely NOT be thyroid cancer, but it is good to rule it out.

One of the friends I mentioned, that recently was diagnosed with thyroid cancer, had none of the above symptoms. Her thyroid cancer was discovered with an ultrasound of her thyroid gland. Prior to the ultrasound test, she was diagnosed with a parathyroid disorder when a regular blood test showed elevated calcium levels. Parathyroid glands are located behind the thyroid gland and control the amount of calcium in our blood and bones. They are 4 small glands located by the thyroid. My friend had an ultrasound to see which parathyroid had a tumor and would be removed.

However, the ultrasound showed a large, dark looking tumor on her thyroid, and later a needle biopsy was performed. The results showed that she has papillary thyroid cancer. Her thyroid will be removed this Friday.

There are different types of thyroid cancer

Once the type of thyroid cancer is determined, surgery and a treatment plan is designed. Normally, thyroid cancers are easily treated so no need to panic. 70% of thyroid cancer is papillary cancer, which is an uncontrolled growth of follicular cells.

Other types of thyroid cancer are:

  • Follicular thyroid cancer represents 10% of thyroid cancers.
  • Hurthle cell thyroid is another form though very rare.
  • Medullary thyroid cancer makes up a small 3%.
  • Anaplastic thyroid cancer is in about 1% of thyroid cancer.

Treatments

  • Surgery
  • Radioactive iodine
  • Radiation therapy

What to expect

After surgery, there will be a thin red scar that, overtime, be hard to notice. Because the thyroid has been removed, the patient will be on thyroid hormone replacement for the rest of their life. Blood test are ordered every 6 months to determine if the dose of thyroid replacement prescription needs to be increased or decreased.

Survival rate is 90% if caught at an early stage. Most people lead normal and long lives after being diagnosed and treated.

Why is there an increase of thyroid cancer?

Physicians are mystified about what is causing the rise in thyroid cancers. Some theories blame radiation including Chernobyl nuclear power disaster in 1986, and possibly all the nuclear testing in the 1950s. Then there are the dental X-rays and yearly mammograms. Do they contribute? No one knows for sure.

Should You Get The Flu Shot?

Should you get the flu shot? Good question. I think everyone has a right to making this decision for themselves without pressure from doctors, pharmacies, Big Pharma, etc. How about making an informed decision. We are all label readers now. When I go down the aisles in the grocery stores I see people holding up cans and packages carefully reading the ingredients.

So, why don’t people use the same curiosity and caution before pulling up their sleeves and letting a health professional jab their arm with a clear liquid. Boom! It’s quick and happens before you can count to five.

What is the flu anyway? Flu, short for influenza, is a a highly contagious viral infection of the respiratory passages causing fever, and severe aching. I have had the flu once many years ago and it hit me like a 18 wheeler. Wow!  I would prefer not to go through that again.

How many people come down with the flu every year? Flu seasons are unpredictable, according to the CDC. Each year, on average, 5 percent to 20 percent of the U.S. population gets the flu and more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from complications.

I was a young adult when I came down with the flu and was able to recover without any medical intervention, however people who are older or have compromised immune systems will have a more difficult time recovering. Some will be hospitalized.

The flu is highly contagious and peaks during the winter months when people are confined in close places due to cold weather.

How reliable is the flu vaccine?

CDC conducts studies each year to determine how well the influenza (flu) vaccine protects against flu illness. While vaccine effectiveness can vary, recent studies show that flu vaccination reduces the risk of flu illness by between 40% and 60% among the overall population during seasons when most circulating flu viruses are well-matched to the flu vaccine.

How are flu vaccines produced?

The most common way that flu vaccines are made is using an egg-based manufacturing process that has been used for more than 70 years. Egg-based vaccine manufacturing is used to make both inactivated (killed) vaccine (usually called the “flu shot”) and live attenuated (weakened) vaccine (usually called the “nasal spray”).

There also is a cell-based production process for flu vaccines, which was approved by FDA in 2012. Until recently, this production process also began with egg-grown CVVs per FDA regulations. However, on August 31,2016, FDA issued an approval for Seqirus, the sole FDA-approved cell-based flu vaccine manufacturer in the United States, to use cell-grown CVVs. The process of creating cell-based flu vaccines involves several steps. First, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends cell-grown CVVs for distribution to manufacturers. Next, manufacturers inoculate the CVVs into cultured mammalian cells (instead of into eggs) and allow them to replicate for a few days. Then, the virus-containing fluid is collected from the cells and the virus antigen is purified. The manufacturing process continues with purification and testing. Finally, FDA tests and approves the vaccines prior to release and shipment.

There is a third production technology for flu vaccines that was approved for use in the U.S. market in 2013 and that involves using recombinant technology. This production method does not require an egg-grown vaccine virus and does not use chicken eggs at all in the production process. Instead, manufacturers isolate a certain protein from a naturally occurring (“wild type”) recommended vaccine virus (the HA protein, which induces an immune response in people). These proteins are then combined with portions of another virus that grows well in insect cells. This “recombinant” vaccine virus is then mixed with insect cells and allowed to replicate. The flu HA protein is then harvested from these cells and purified. The purified protein is packaged while waiting for FDA testing and approval to release lots. Currently, recombinant flu vaccine is the only 100% egg-free vaccine on the U.S. market.

What ingredients are in a flu shot?

Beta-propiolactone, calcium chloride, dibasic sodium phosphate, egg protein, monobasic potassium phosphate, monobasic sodium phosphateneomycin sulfatepolymyxin Bpotassium chloridesodium taurodeoxychoalate, thimerosal(multi-dose vials only).

Is there mercury in flu shots?

The preservative that we find in multi-dose flu shots is thimerosal (ethylmercury). Vaccine labs add Thimerosal to multidose vaccines because each time a new needle is inserted into the vial, there is a chance of introducing microbes into the vaccine and contaminating it.

Mercury is a neurotoxin. Neurotoxins are substances that are poisonous or destructive to nerve tissue. Neurotoxins are an extensive class of exogenous chemical neurological insults that can adversely affect function in both developing and mature nervous tissue.

Follow the money.

Several pharmaceutical companies made a conscious decision to chase and develop the vaccines market towards the end of the last decade, as it became clear that the traditional blockbuster drug treatment model for the industry was changing. Vaccines were seen as promising from a business perspective because they could be applied to huge swathes of the population, and because the economic case for payment could be made to governments. AstraZeneca, the U.K. pharmaceuticals giant, paid $15.6 billion for MedImmune, the U.S vaccines specialist, in 2007 to get a foothold in the vaccines market. (Read more: Pharma’s next Holy Grail)

If you have read this article, you are now ready to make an informed decision on whether to get the flu shot.

Cancer: The Macrobiotic Diet Saved Robert’s Life

Cancer: The Macrobiotic Diet Saved Robert’s Life by Terry Ryan, Health Blogger

It has been a year since the first time I had my blood analysis done by Robert Aronson, president of Preventive Screening Services, (see my post about it HERE) and I was curious to see how I, hopefully, improved. Robert had told me that I was showing signs of leaky gut, anemia, and liver damage. He gave me a list of supplements to take and said to stay away from Advil which I was taking to fight off pain from inflammation. My legs ached at night.

I did just what he recommended, and a year later I was back to see how I fared. I did great!  My blood showed I improved remarkably, and no leaky gut, no signs of liver damage, and healthy blood count. “Take a picture of it,” Robert said enthusiastically as he pointed at the screen.

My phone was back home charging up on the night table so I wasn’t able to take a picture. But I was happy to see the results.

Was I surprised? Not really because I had stuck to clean eating, eliminating sugar, and taking my supplements. The pain in my legs had ceased so I no longer needed daily Advil which can affect the liver.

Robert doesn’t mince words. He is one busy man who has devoted himself to promoting holistic health to anyone who will listen. He travels around Florida, health store to health store, and does blood analysis procedures. There usually is a line of people who have reserved a half hour time slot with Robert, and there can be no unnecessary small talk. He likes to get right down to business.

Well, lucky for him, I was a repeat customer so he didn’t have to go through the normal descriptions and pictures of what he was going to do, and what to expect. I told him to get right to the chase.

He gently rubbed the tip of my finger with alcohol and pricked it with a needle device so quickly that I hardly felt anything. Then he applied the drop of my blood on a glass plate and placed it under the high-powered microscope. He looked up at the large screen and turned the tip of the microscope until my blood cells were all in focus.

While he was doing this, I figured it was a good time to shoot some questions at him. The prior time that we met, I thought I was going to have time to thoroughly interview him for my blog, Slim Healthy Sexy. Heck no!  Robert goes at the speed of light. He talks fast and there is very little time for idle chit chat. He has one mission and that is to examine your blood. Then he is scribbling suggestions down and jumping out of his seat to hand other people waiting in line a clipboard to fill out, or to grab a supplement he thinks you should take. What a whirlwind!  Whirlwind but in a very nice way.

I was prepared this time having an entire year to think about what he told me. No, it wasn’t about me, it was about him. He told me that years ago, while he owned several fan stores (this is Florida and ceiling fans are a staple) he was experiencing tremendous abdominal pain. He went to his doctor who ordered a CT scan, and a large mass was detected in Robert’s colon. That along with some startling blood lab results confirmed that he had STAGE 4 colon cancer. Acutely alarmed, understandably so, the doctor told Robert that he needed surgery immediately followed up by chemotherapy. Now, I don’t know how a person can summon up the emotional strength to do this after just learning that he had colon cancer, but Robert said, “let me think about this.” Or something to that effect.

Robert went home and researched and decided to try a macrobiotic diet. He called his doctor and cancelled the surgery, and informed him what he was going to do. The doctor was so aTerry Ryan, Health Bloggerngry with Robert that he said, “Robert, you will be dead in four months if you do not go through with the surgery and chemotherapy!”

Not only did the doctor FIRE Robert as a patient he stopped his pain prescription. Boy, what guts it must takes to turn down your conventional doctor who writes the prescription for your pain medication, and has told you you were going to DIE within months! I can’t image having that kind of courage.

Robert told me that he had too many things going on to stop for cancer surgery. What?! Too much going on? Fan stores and a family to support vs. being treated for cancer. Wow!

Anyway, he is sitting right next to me years later so obviously the macrobiotic diet worked. I asked him (see, I’m getting more questions in this time) how did he find out about the macrobiotic diet besides just stumbling on it on Google? He said he was inspired by a Life Magazine story by Anthony Satillano. I could not find the Life Magazine article but I did find his book on Amazon. Click here to purchase it. HERE

Fabulous autobiographical story about a Philadelphia physician and hospital administrator who has metastatic prostate cancer. One day, feeling hopeless, and resigned to an early and painful death, he picks up some hitchhikers. They ask him why he is so depressed, and upon hearing about his condition, they pronounce it not so difficult to cure. Of course, the Dr. is very skeptical, but he agrees to meet their friends and so is introduced to macrobiotics. The book is about Dr. Sattilaro’s healing journey and how his new macrobiotic food and friends help him return to good health and give him back his life.To Dr. Sattilaro’s surprise, the life to which he returns is much richer and filled with infinite gratitude.

Holy moly!  A cure so easy! Could I really believe a macrobiotic diet could be it?  Well, there was the proof, Robert Aronson.

Here is a link to the macrobiotic diet. Click here!

Robert told me he called his former doctor 14 months after he was FIRED as a patient. The doctor was SHOCKED that Robert was still alive. Intrigued the doctor asked him to come in for testing and much to his amazement, Robert was free of all signs of cancer. That was 20 years ago.

Here are the supplements Robert suggested I take after my last blood analysis:

Probiotics-Garden of life 30-50 Billion per day TO ORDER CLICK HERE
TO ORDER CLICK HERE per day, Country Life and take with Co-Enzymy B Complex

“It wards off dementia and Alzheimer,” he said.

I will definitely add probiotics and B12 to my daily supplements.

Thanks, Robert. Glad you’re still with us!
