Blood Chocolate
I hate to burst your chocolate bubble, but you could be eating blood chocolate!!!!
That’s right, you could be munching on a bar of chocolate that came from the sweat and tears….and blood from a child who is being forced into child slavery. You probably heard of Blood Diamonds, and I wrote a blog on coffee, which uses at SOME of the plantations slave workers. CLICK HERE FOR BLOG But I and I’m sure a lot of people reading this blog on www.slimhealthysexy.com did not know that CHOCOLATE is WORSE than Blood Diamonds! (Bigger market therefore uses more slaves.) How did I find out? I was talking to my local coffee guru who informed me that chocolate uses the most slave labor than coffee and diamonds. What?! Blood chocolate!!!! Hershey uses SLAVE LABOR? Can this be true? So, of course, I did a little research. Here is what I got.
Where does chocolate come from?
It all starts with a small tropical tree, the Theobroma cacao, usually called simply, “cacao.” (Pronounced ka-KOW. Theobroma is Greek for “food of the gods.”) Cacao is native to Central and South America, but it is grown commercially throughout the tropics. About 70% of the world’s cacao is grown in Africa.
A cacao tree can produce close to two thousand pods per year. The ridged, football shaped pod, or fruit, of the cacao grows from the branches and, oddly, straight out of the trunk. The pods, which mature throughout the year, encase a sticky white pulp and about 30 or 40 seeds. The pulp is both sweet and tart; it is eaten and used in making drinks. The seeds, were you to bite into one straight out of the pod, are incredibly bitter. Not at all like the chocolate that comes from them. (Source: http://facts-about-chocolate.com/where-does-chocolate-come-from/)
Then what happens?
At the factory, the cacao beans are first sifted for foreign objects- you know, rocks, machetes, whatever got left in the bag. The cacao is weighed and sorted by type so that the manufacturer knows exactly what type of cacao is going into the chocolate. Some manufacturers use up to twelve types of cacao in their recipes, and they must carefully measure so that the flavor is consistent time after time.
Next, the cacao beans are roasted in large, rotating ovens, at temperatures of about 210-290F. Roasting lasts from half an hour up to two hours. The heat brings out more flavor and aroma, and it dries and darkens the beans.
Okay, this sounds very innocent so far but…
According to an investigative report by the BBC, hundreds of thousands of children are being purchased from their parents or outright stolen and then shipped to Ivory Coast, where they are enslaved on cocoa farms. Destitute parents in these poverty-stricken lands sell their children to traffickers believing that they will find honest work in Ivory Coast and send some of their earnings home. The terrible reality is that these children, 11-to-16-years-old but sometimes younger, are forced to do hard manual labor 80 to 100 hours a week. They are paid nothing, receive no education, are under fed, and are often viciously beaten if they try to escape. Most will never see their families again.
Who are the biggest chocolate companies that use slave labor?
The bottom line: Most chocolate is very, very bad — even if it’s expensive, comes in a fancy box, or calls itself “gourmet.”
Hershey, Nestle and Mars. Didn’t we all grow up with those brands? Right now, I bet they don’t taste as good now that you know they use slave labor. Everybody’s favorite chocolate bar is now involved in a lawsuit. As per Refinery 21, lawsuits were filed against major candy companies namely The Hershey Company, Mars Inc., and Nestle.
What can you do for your chocolate fix?
Well, first of all, you shouldn’t wolf down a large chocolate bar like it was the last chocolate bar you were ever going to have. Chocolate, and good TOP GRADE chocolate that is ethically produced and ORGANIC should be savored on special occasions.
Look for chocolate that comes from Latin America which seems to have the labels ORGANIC, Rainforest Alliance and FAIR TRADE.

You can also Google your favorite chocolate company to see where they stand on SLAVERY. Example: I want to see if Godiva uses Blood Chocolate. I found this-
Hershey’s and Godiva both poor social track records . Hershey’s has been a perennial target for refusing to take action to end child slave labor on cocoa farms in the Côte D’Ivoire. You can find more information about Hershey’s and their track record at Raise the Bar or their report card by Free2Work.Godiva received a “D-” ranking from Free2Work and is not certified by any 3rd party agency.
Now, both Hershey’s and Godiva are doubling down and opposing consumers’ right to know regarding genetically engineered foods. Hershey’s has contributed $498,006.72 and Godiva has contributed $11,121.53 to the No on 37 Campaign. You can see a full list of corporations supporting and opposing Proposition 37 here.
My name is Vida Tsatso Boaful, and I am a cocoa farmer at Nkranfum, a community in the Assin North Municipality in Ghana. I am part of the Rainforest Alliance certification program because I want to be trained in improved and efficient ways of cultivating cocoa, so as to let my cocoa trees last longer, increase my yield, get some premium on the sale of my beans and also conserve and protect existing forests and waterways in and around my farm. http://www.rainforest-alliance.org/work/agriculture/cocoa/vida
So, the next time you purchase chocolate, I advise you to skip the impulse shopping at the checkout where are the BLOOD CHOCOLATE is and peruse the candy aisle for FAIR TRADE chocolate. It will up the price on the chocolate from $1.00 to $4/$5 but it is soooo worth it.
The issue of children working in the cocoa industry has been the subject of scrutiny and attempted reforms for more than a decade. Yet an estimated 2.24 million children under the age of 17 still work in cocoa production in the Ivory Coast and Ghana, according to a study published by Tulane University in 2015. The number of child laborers in the industry rose by about 59% over a five-year span, the study found, despite a 2001 international agreement aimed at ending such abuses.
STOP SLAVE LABOR!!!!

Amazing Turmeric
Turmeric has been a main spice ingredient in Indian food and I may have purchased the orange colored spice once in my life and left it in the spice cabinet for years where it hardened and I threw it in the trash. To tell you the truth I never knew what to do with it. But now that I am reaching Master Juicer title (self named) I have been researching the different herbs and vegetables to super-size my juice recipes turning me and my followers into SUPER HUMANS!!! Da da da TA! So here is what I found out about turmeric.
Turmeric has a peppery, warm and bitter flavor and a mild fragrance slightly reminiscent of orange and ginger, and while it is best known as one of the ingredients used to make curry, it also gives ballpark mustard its bright yellow color.
A Potent, Yet Safe Anti-Inflammatory
The volatile oil fraction of turmeric has demonstrated significant anti-inflammatory activity in a variety of experimental models. Even more potent than its volatile oil is the yellow or orange pigment of turmeric, which is called curcumin. Curcumin is thought to be the primary pharmacological agent in turmeric. In numerous studies, curcumin’s anti-inflammatory effects have been shown to be comparable to the potent drugs hydrocortisone and phenylbutazone as well as over-the-counter anti-inflammatory agents such as Motrin. Unlike the drugs, which are associated with significant toxic effects (ulcer formation, decreased white blood cell count, intestinal bleeding), curcumin produces no toxicity.
“Curcumin may provide an inexpensive, well-tolerated, and effective treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) such as Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, recent research suggests.”
Relief for Rheumatoid Arthritis
Clinical studies have substantiated that curcumin also exerts very powerful antioxidant effects. As an antioxidant, curcumin is able to neutralize free radicals, chemicals that can travel through the body and cause great amounts of damage to healthy cells and cell membranes. This is important in many diseases, such as arthritis, where free radicals are responsible for the painful joint inflammation and eventual damage to the joints. Turmeric’s combination of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects explains why many people with joint disease find relief when they use the spice regularly. In a recent study of patients with rheumatoid arthritis, curcumin was compared to phenylbutazone and produced comparable improvements in shortened duration of morning stiffness, lengthened walking time, and reduced joint swelling.
Cancer Prevention
Curcumin’s antioxidant actions enable it to protect the colon cells from free radicals that can damage cellular DNA—a significant benefit particularly in the colon where cell turnover is quite rapid, occurring approximately every three days. Because of their frequent replication, mutations in the DNA of colon cells can result in the formation of cancerous cells much more quickly. Curcumin also helps the body to destroy mutated cancer cells, so they cannot spread through the body and cause more harm. A primary way in which curcumin does so is by enhancing liver function. Additionally, other suggested mechanisms by which it may protect against cancer development include inhibiting the synthesis of a protein thought to be instrumental in tumor formation and preventing the development of additional blood supply necessary for cancer cell growth.
Turmeric and Onions May Help Prevent Colon Cancer
Curcumin, a phytonutrient found in the curry spice turmeric, and quercitin, an antioxidant in onions, reduce both the size and number of precancerous lesions in the human intestinal tract, shows research published in the August 2006 issue of Clinical Gasteroenterology and Hepatology.
Five patients with an inherited form of precancerous polyps in the lower bowel known as familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) were treated with regular doses of curcumin and quercetin over an average of six months. The average number of polyps dropped 60.4%, and the average size of the polyps that did develop dropped by 50.9%.
FAP runs in families and is characterized by the development of hundreds of polyps (colorectal adenomas) and, eventually, colon cancer. Recently, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen) have been used to treat some patients with this condition, but these drugs often produce significant side effects, including gastrointestinal ulcerations and bleeding, according to lead researcher Francis M. Giardiello, M.D., at the Division of Gastroenterology, Johns Hopkins University.
Previous observational studies in populations that consume large amounts of curry, as well as animal research, have strongly suggested that curcumin, one of the main ingredients in Asian curries, might be effective in preventing and/or treating cancer in the lower intestine. Similarly, quercetin, an anti-oxidant flavonoid found in a variety of foods including onions, green tea and red wine, has been shown to inhibit growth of colon cancer cell lines in humans and abnormal colorectal cells in animals.
In this study, a decrease in polyp number was observed in four of five patients at three months and four of four patients at six months.
Each patient received curcumin (480 mg) and quercetin (20 mg) orally 3 times a day for 6 months. Although the amount of quercetin was similar to what many people consume daily, the curcumin consumed was more than would be provided in a typical diet because turmeric only contains on average 3-5 % curcumin by weight.
While simply consuming curry and onions may not have as dramatic an effect as was produced in this study, this research clearly demonstrates that liberal use of turmeric and onions can play a protective role against the development of colorectal cancer. And turmeric doesn’t have to only be used in curries. This spice is delicious on healthy sautéed apples, and healthy steamed cauliflower and/or green beans and onions. Or, for a flavor-rich, low-calorie dip, try adding some turmeric and dried onion to creamy yogurt.

:Last Saturday I went to Jessica’s Organic Farm in Sarasota. It is practically hidden in the middle of Sarasota County and even with my GPS I made a few wrong turns, but I did find it. There were acres of veggies growing and the humble stand was full of produce, and organic produce at that. In fact there was only one item that wasn’t organic; coconuts from Thailand.
At the entrance is a large display of different edible grasses and sprouts. I recognized wheat grass but the rest was foreign to me. I saw a man with long dreadlocks and thought he looked like a juicer but when I asked him he answered in a very thick accent and I really couldn’t understand him except that part that he was not a juicer. The prices were reasonable and a lot of variety that is mostly grown at the farm. The hours are limited: Friday, Saturday and Sunday only and closed June, July and August.
I selected beets, dandelions, parsley, kale, 2 gorgeous artichokes, cucumber, and English peas. The entire bill came to $22.00.
Today’s recipe was:
- Dandelion
- Parsley
- Cucumber
- Lemon
- Celery
- Apple
I am still using my garage sale find, a juice extractor I call Old Faithful.
If you want to be slim, healthy, and sexy at any age, I recommend juicing and signing up with my blog for updates and tips.
Happy juicing!

What a Difference a Day Can Make.
What a difference a day can make. Oh so true. Just happened to my neighbor who thought she had a cold and heavy chest feeling. She went to her doctor and complained about the constant cough and was prescribed antibiotics. Doctors are trained to look for the horse and not the zebra…that’s actually taught at med school. Only look more deeply if the patient keeps on coming back. In one of my progressive doctor’s office she had a small statue of a zebra. I went to her once, then she moved to a small island off Maine. (sigh)
My neighbor’s course of antibiotic treatment didn’t help and different antibiotics were prescribed and more and more until her doctor ordered a chest X-ray, and you, the reader, have probably guessed this one already; lung cancer that already spread. Prognosis, terrible.
Last night I was on Facebook when I received a DM from my other neighbor. “Did you hear about, Mary?” (Name changed for protection.) I grabbed my cell and called my messenger. She told me the ugly details. Radiation, chemo, months to live. The family is crushed! (understatement)
A similar situation happened to a friend in Arizona. He was feeling well at Christmas and by the end of January he complained of problems swallowing. In a few more days it was disruptive enough to send him to his doctor who said he had to ween himself off blood thinners (heart related problems) before he could have an endoscope. A few days later the test showed a large cancerous tumor. A month later, my friend passed away from esophageal cancer. I didn’t even have time to bombard him with alternative treatments.
My friend and neighbor, L. said it best when she said, “What a difference a day makes.” It is so true, You are going along enjoying life and WHAM, life will never be the same.
Let’s look at the facts. Cancer rates are still growing and the treatment is pretty much the same: radiation and cancer. Really? All the money sent to the American Cancer Society for research and they haven’t found a better treatment option?

However, when I really look closely at the 2 lifestyles of the people I mentioned above, is it really that shocking that they both have/had rapidly spreading cancer? They both smoked cigarettes, ate a terrible diet, one drank to excess and both had other serious health issues before being diagnosed with CANCER. It shouldn’t be a shock. Were they asking for it? Heck no! They were just enjoying life and living it according to their terms. They never imagined that they would get a cancer diagnosis down the path of life. But what they really hurt with their reckless lifestyle are their loved ones. My neighbor has young daughters and a husband that depends on her. My Arizona friend leaves behind a wife that was hoping to enjoy retirement with him and children and grandchildren. He was a terrific man who I would always call when I was in a jam, and he would come to the rescue. I called him once from Florida to rescue my friends who broke down in their boat on an upstate NY lake and called me asking what should they do and help? I’ll call so and so….He always came through.
So, my best advice and the purpose of writing this post is, plan ahead. Start taking care of your body now while you still have good health and then maybe you will fight off colds, diseases and cancer. Do it now while you have control of your bodies. I strongly recommend to start healing yourself now and don’t wait for the CANCER diagnose before you take proactive action. TAKE IT NOW!
Take a life lesson from the people I mentioned above. If not for you, then for people who love you and depend on you. You owe it to them! Think what would happen if you were to get sick and leave this life too early? Who would really suffer? Parents, friends, and children that depend on you? When you look at it that way eating and having a lifestyle that is irresponsible is selfish! That’s right, SELFISH! Do you think so much of yourself and not of others that you can eat, drink, not exercise without consequences? GREEDY!
You owe it to your loved ones, yourself, your community and the world to be the BEST person possible and that comes with eating the greatest food for your body. It is also about setting a good example to people around you and to your children and grandchildren.
How to do this?
- Eat raw vegetable when possible everyday…good way is through juicing.
- Chose organic! (You think organic eating is expensive…wait until you pay for cancer treatments even with health insurance.)
- Skip sugar (feeds cancer cells)
- Don’t eat processed carbs
- Gluten…not good for you
- Nope on the alcohol. I don’t care want they try to tell you on TV. Alcohol is poison.
- Move it! I love 10 minutes on a rebounder . Click here to see what it is. Click Here!
- Drink lots of H20.
- Skip all the stress. Take time to sit on a beach, read a fiction book, eat by candlelight.
- Don’t eat red meat with added hormones, antibiotics, fed bad diets, slaughtered inhumanely with
adrenaline rushing though their bodies…so BAD for you. Unless you hunt it yourself skip red meat.
In conclusion, the message here is take control of your own life through healthy living and hopefully live longer and happier. Is eating healthy a guarantee that you will live longer? No. There is no guarantee in life but your chances improve greatly.
Plus:
- You look better!
- You feel better!
- You’re friends will like you more.
- You will inspire your friends and children.
- Less animals will have to die to support your diet.
- You will support organic farmers.
- Your skin will glow.
- You will just give the aura of good health to people around you.
- You will slow the aging process.
- You will look younger.
- Less colds.
- Better moods.
- Less headaches.
- That rash will go away.
- Better memory.
- Better eyesight.
- Stave off dementia.
- Wrinkle reducer.
- Your skin will be more elastic.
- What anxiety?
What a difference a day can make….It could be a good difference!!! Think about that. To your health!
