How to Deal with the Pain from An Autoimmune Disease

How to Deal with the Pain from An Autoimmune Disease

By guest blogger, Patrick Bailey

In the wake of the technological revolution in the field of health, science, and technology, some things still remain unclear, such as the cause of autoimmunity. Through the years, scientists are trying to find cures for this debilitating set of diseases but until now it is still vague. While the search for its causes and cures are still ongoing, scientists have found ways to manage its symptoms.

There are approximately 50 million Americans nowadays suffering from an autoimmune disease. The American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association reveals that only a small part of this population can name at last one autoimmune disease. It is now the eighth main concern of women. It also shortens eight years from the normal lifespan. Autoimmune diseases cost the US health care $120 billion annually greater than the burden caused by cancer, which is only $70 billion in a year.

Dr. Elliot Rosenstein, one of the pioneers of the Institute for Rheumatic and Autoimmune Diseases at Atlantic Health System’s Overlook Medical Center, said that autoimmune diseases are infamously hard to diagnose and there is no cure for them even if they are recognized.

Dr. Elliot Rosenstein further says that patients diagnosed with the similar autoimmune disease do not present a similar set of signs and symptoms. Most of the patients suffer from dizziness, low-grade fevers, nausea, fatigue, and weight loss. These symptoms are vague and can be caused by several medical conditions. Rosenstein adds that there is a tendency for these manifestations to overlap. To differentiate patients with lupus from patients with rheumatoid arthritis can be very hard.

What is an Autoimmune Disease?

Our body has an immune system that shields us from infections and diseases. However, if you have an autoimmune disease, this protection transforms as an enemy that assaults by mistake, the healthy cells in our body. This disease can upset various parts of our body. When the immune system becomes overactive, it harms its own tissues. When the immune system is suffering from a deficiency disease, the body becomes susceptible to infections because of its ability to combat invaders is reduced.

Usually, the immune system can differentiate between your own cells and foreign cells. However, when there is an autoimmune disease, it identifies other parts of the body like joints and other organs as foreign. When this happens, the immune system discharges proteins called auto-antibodies to attack the strong cells.

There are various examples of autoimmune diseases; this includes Systemic Lupus Erythematosus, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, and Multiple Sclerosis. Other types of autoimmune diseases are Psoriasis, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Vasculitis, Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy, and Guillain-Barre Syndrome, to name a few.

Treatment of Autoimmune Diseases

If the disease is diagnosed, there are various treatments that are usually administered to patients. The treatment aims to regulate the autoimmune process, lessen the symptoms, and as much as possible help the body to continuously fight the illness. The treatment includes taking several supplements to fill in the lacking substance that the body needs. These are vitamin B12, hormones for thyroid, and insulin. There are times that treatment requires a blood transfusion and physical therapy.

Some patients take medicines to alleviate the abnormal response of the immune system. These are immunosuppressive pills like non-steroidal medicines and steroids. Some disease uses Interleukin suppressants and TNF blockers. However, the majority of the patients use pain relievers to ease their suffering. While these are effective medicines, most of the time, these medications are only used for suppressing the pain and not directly targeting the cause of the illness.

Painkillers and prescription opiates, in the course of time, can also affect the body. Physicians prescribe aspirins and other anti-inflammatory medicines to ease the pain. But stronger immune suppressing pills have grave side effects that could result in more serious problems in the future. The most effective way to combat and treat an autoimmune disease is to know its underlying causes. Knowing the sources can easily heal your body. Here are several ways on how to deal with the pain from autoimmune disease without the painkillers

  • Eat Nutritious and Healthy Anti-Inflammatory Food

Change and include anti-inflammatory foods in your diet. This includes taking in food rich in Omega-3, green leafy vegetables, and turmeric. Aside from these, avoid consuming foods that are high in sugar. Include at least nine servings of vegetables and fruits every day. You should also limit saturated fats to at least 10 percent daily. It is also recommended that you eat fish three times a week. You should also avoid eating refined sugars and processed foods. Several studies discovered that eating anti-inflammatory rich food will not only protect you from certain illnesses but will also help you lose weight, stabilize your blood sugar, and increase your metabolism.

  • Repair the Gut

The easiest way to start repairing your gut includes consuming anti-inflammatory diet, eradicating gluten, and eating whole food. This is because the majority of the immune system heavily relies on the gut or digestive system. If this gets damaged, your immune system will be left unprotected to foreign opportunistic elements like bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. Your body will trigger your immune response and will aggravate your enteric nervous system. This will result in a wide array of problems such as mood disorders, allergy, autoimmunity, arthritis, and many more.

  • Increase Physical Movement

Regular exercise is a natural anti-inflammatory. You do not necessarily need to enroll in a fitness gym or buy a treadmill to do this. Start by moving around more frequently and use your body more often. Exercise also allows you to sweat out toxins from your body and relieves you of stress

  • Practice Relaxation

One of the main factors that aggravate the immune response of the body is stress. It is very important that you include several calming and deep relaxation techniques in your lifestyle to lessen anxiety and stress in your body. There are many ways to relax nowadays; this includes practicing Yoga and getting a massage.

  • Get Enough Sleep

Irregular sleep, poor sleeping pattern, and lack of sleep can harm your metabolism. When this happens, you will have cravings for carbohydrates and sugar, which push you to eat more. To reverse inflammation and to achieve good health, getting enough sleep is essential.

Autoimmune diseases, like any other illnesses, can be remedied by a healthy lifestyle. Healthy living is not a trend but rather a way of life. This is the proper way that our lives should be lived. These natural steps suggested above are just simple and practical truths that most of us forget amidst living this busy life.

You Are Not Crazy…It’s Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis by Terry Ryan

You are not crazy

I have Hashimoto’s thyroditis

Been there and will always be there. I have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. It is an autoimmune disease. Plain and simple. AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE!  An autoimmune disease is a syndrome where the body senses an invader and goes on immune attack. In my case, it attacked my thyroid. My autoimmune disease is named after the doctor who discovered the disease. Hashimoto’s is diagnosed by a high TSH (thyroid thyroid-stimulating) lab test and high TPO, thyroid peroxidase . Hence, I am hypothyroid. My thyroid is not producing enough of the thyroid hormone, T4. When that happened, I felt extremely fatigued, suffered with hair loss, aches and pains, DEPRESSION, just to name a few. And what do your doctors, friends and family think after your complaints about symptoms month after month and year after year? That you are crazy. You are not crazy…it’s Hashimoto’s!

Buy Here

It takes years to develop

Hashimoto’s thyroiditis disease. This happened slowly. My symptoms started showing up one by one. First, I noticed my energy reducing, I started dragging myself through the day. I went to the doctor. He ran lab tests, but everything looked “fine” including my TSH. If it is high…usually over 3, it means you are hypothyroid. The TSH lab test is the standard test that endocrinologists use to determine if you are either hyperthyroid (too much thyroid hormone) or hypothyroid (not enough thyroid).  Sort of goes against reasoning. If you have a high TSH reading, this means you are HYPO (I have been as high as), and if you have a zero reading, it means you have too much thyroid hormone and you are HYPER. Why is this?

How it works

The pituitary gland itself is regulated by another gland, known as the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is part of the brain and produces TSH Releasing Hormone (TRH) which tells the pituitary gland to stimulate the thyroid gland (release TSH). The pituitary gland located in the back of your head regulates when the body needs thyroid hormone. When it needs more, it sends a message out to the thyroid that it needs more hormone. When this happens, your TSH goes up, When there is too much hormone, it will do the opposite. By the way, in the beginning I swung back and forth between hyper to hypo. I miss the hyperthyroid times when I had more energy and could lose weight easily. This happens as my thyroid gland was sputtering to a dead stop at producing hormones.

What happened next to me? I said this happened slowly; my decline in health did not happen overnight. It wasn’t one day I woke up and I had all the Hashimoto’s symptoms. No, it crept up on me like a monster stealing my life force. Horrible and insidious.

I lost count of the doctor visits where I plead my case of I DON’T FEEL WELL, only to be dismissed as, I would guess. a hypochondriac, or a overworked and stress out middle-aged woman.

As the days, months and years went on, I felt worse and worse until I was not able to do normal activities, and I even became antisocial. Sound familiar? You are not crazy…it’s Hashimoto’s thyroiditis.

Here are some symptoms associated with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis:

  • Anxiety
  • Panic attacks
  • Weight gain
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Dry skin
  • Headaches
  • Sore throat
  • Muscle aches and pains
  • Temperature sensitivity
  • Hair loss

The lost years…

I suffered for many years. I call them the lost years. No doctors helped me. They didn’t have the knowledge or if they couldn’t throw a pill at it, they didn’t know how to treat me. By the time I was diagnosed, my thyroid was a shriveled up gland with nodules. No worries, they weren’t  cancerous. I have a ultrasound every year and they are getting smaller.

Yes, I will be on thyroid prescription for the rest of my life and I have tried them all. My greatest results are with the prescription Tirosint. It is expensive but I switched years ago when I learned that Synthroid used gluten as a filler, and I am anti-gluten. Gluten is a no-no if you have an autoimmune disease.

The good news

The good news is that I no longer suffer with symptoms even though I still and always will have Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. I have figured out how to put my Hashimoto’s into remission. Some people call it that, but all I know is that I now have energy and no pain. How did I achieve that? By taking a lot of junk out of my diet. Clean living and eating. My entire life changed…and for the better.

Now I exercise for 3 hours per day, and then come home and run errands, clean house, make dinner, blog, write, read and all the things that go into a normal day. And I am so happy. So happy. I have my life back.

I have written one book on Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and it has a lot of medical information, and maybe too much medical mumbo jumbo. A lot of people have purchased it on Amazon, which surprises me because I do very little promoting. Right now, I am in the process of writing another book which will be available soon.

If you want to be on my mailing list, I send out healthful tips, recipes and updates on when my books will be available, you can sign up here.

I want you to know, that having a normal life is possible when you have Hashimoto’s. I am the proof.

Thanks for reading!

I Started the Keto Diet by Terry Ryan

Lake George, Sarasota, Hurricane Irma, and The Keto Diet

Beautiful Lake George

The girls and I. Friends for years and years.

Hi, I’m back after a busy summer vacation in Lake George, NY. We (hubby, mother and 2 chihuahuas) drove up in July, which took 3 days, to Upstate NY from Sarasota, FL which is where I started the KETO DIET. Keto, ketolicious, much protein, meat, butter, cheese. Goes against all the conventional diet thinking. The food pyramid hates this diet. It contradicts everything it stands for. SAD (Standard American Diet) means low fat, grains are okay, low fat diet. Keto is the opposite. Here is a book on the Keto diet.  Keto diet prohibits the following:

  • No sugar (god no!)
  • No grains…including oats, rice.
  • No gluten (Check your medicine. Gluten may be a filler)
  • High fats
  • High protein
  • LOW carbs

Stick to the above and you will lose weight. I’ve lost 15 pounds and 20 more to go.

Back toHubby insisted on taking route 95 which proved to be a bad idea when we hit traffic congestion just below Washington, and this was on a Sunday!  So, we hunkered down in a Red Roof for the night and decided to start next morning by 5:00am to beat the traffic.

Molly is Kenan’s copilot

We did just that except the traffic on 95 was already bumper to bumper at 5:00am!  Plan B was to drive west through Virginia and hop on 81. It was a beautiful drive through Virginia. The morning mist was rising above the fields and horses were grazing. Lovely!

Mom in Ashland, PA.

Finally we made it to my mother’s small cottage on Garrison Lane in Lake George and immediately began to redecorate. Three years prior, the house suffered a lot of water damage due to a busted pipe. We had contractors replace piping and drywall. Anyway, lots more was done but I will spare you the gory details.

Lake George was, as always, a wonderful escape from real life as Internet is limited, and we have no TV. I entertain myself with long drives in the Adirondacks, visiting friends, and reading books, a lot of books.  It’s all knotty pine paneling, cool, refreshing lake water, deep green mountains, and boating.

Now, I’m back in Florida after a great, leisurely drive back through Pennsylvania coal country and Ashville, NC where we toured the Biltmore!  Wow!

But, hello, (sarcastic) we got back in time for Hurricane Irma. The gosh darn Weather Channel made it worse (that was the worse part-the Weather Channel) with their constant prediction of doom and gloom. Fortunately, no damage at my house. My hubby had to volunteer his time at a make-shift pet shelter at the hospital which has located in a cement block room in the middle of the parking garage. This was made available for doctors, nurses and staff of the hospital that had to work through Hurricane Irma but didn’t want to leave their pets home alone.

Summer of 2017: Mary Jean’s 90th Birthday Party

Mom and I accompanied him to the shelter for 2 reasons: 1) Moral support, 2) The Weather Channel finally got under our skin and we thought our only way to survive was by staying at the shelter.

The shelter was let’s just say “icky.” Mom said, “The first rat I see, I’m out of here!”  A pet rat came in and out we went. We ended up leaving (no beds, no food), and went back to my house where we had electric, a full refrigerator, and TV. We watched the hurricane slowly come over the house and then pass on. Windy and rainy but no devastation. Our lemon tree didn’t lose a lemon.

Hubby didn’t fare so well and had to stay in the parking garage for 2 nights watching over 90 dogs, 2 pet rats, 5 cats and 1 turtle. He had to sleep in his car so he had little to eat and little sleep. He was soooo happy to come back home.’

Now it’s a couple of weeks after Hurricane Irma and I’ve started the Keto Diet.

More on  the Keto Diet

The Keto Diet is a low carb, high fat, high protein plan. NO SUGAR!  Keep away from sugar or you will screw the diet up and no weight will be lost.  However, dairy products are allowed on the Keto Diet. Yes, dairy. We are talking cream and butter. I have been taking advantage of this by whipping up a lot of organic cream sweetened with maple syrup.

I made a Keto friendly flourless chocolate cake and served it with spoonfuls of whipped cream. The people in my house LOVED it. Here is the recipe:

Flourless Cake Terry Ryan

Perfect for the Keto Diet! Flour-less chocolate cake by Terry Ryan

Butter a 9 or 10 inch spring form pan.

Mix together 1 cup of coconut flour, 1 cup of almond flour with 6 egg yokes, 1/2 cup of Swerve (sugar substitute). Melt 16 ounces of unsweetened chocolate with a stick of unsalted butter, stir in 2 tablespoons of unsweetened powdered chocolate. Stir until no lumps.

Whip 6 egg whites into frothy peaks. Gently fold into flour mixture and pour into pan. If the batter is too thick, add a little cream. I baked at 350 degrees for 45 mins. Cool and I sprinkled Swerve powdered sugar on top. Serve with whipped cream sweetened with Swerve powdered sugar or a couple of tablespoons of Maple Syrup.

It was a hit at my house.

Tipper insisted on having her time in the driver’s seat.

Here is a chicken dish I made that was DELICIOUS and KETO friendly!  We are eating great here.

Butterfly chicken breasts, add ricotta cheese, mozzarella, Italian spice, pasta sauce.

Close the chicken breasts with toothpicks top with more cheese

Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Here it is obvious that I baked a little too long but we still loved it! Warning, make sure you remove the toothpicks before eating.

I have to admit, I am not that great of a meat eater; preferring vegetables over meat but this is an experiment. so for science I am giving this diet a try. So far, I have been eating well and slowly losing weight.

Things you can not do on the Keto Diet:

  • Eat sugar (Sugar is the enemy)
    Consume process foods.
    No gluten!
    No alcohol (sniff)
Limit fruit to just berries (Must admit for full disclosure, I have eaten peaches and oranges.)

On this diet, I do not crave processed carbs. Once, I used to be a sit-on-the-couch-and-snack kind of person. I have broken that habit. No more do I gorge on a pint of Ben and Jerry’s while watching TV. No more mindless eating. It was tough but I did it.

Keto Diet (short for ketogenic) was a diet designed as a cure for children with epilepsy. It eliminated seizures for many (there is a movie about this staring Meryl Streep) and it was discovered that people lost weight on the diet, too. You may have heard of the diet under another name: Atkins.

Click here for the recipe for my Keto Friendly Chocolate Almond Bark. You can eat as much as you like and it will not raise your glycemic index. (The glycemic index or glycaemic index (GI) is a number associated with a particular type of food that indicates the food’s effect on a person’s blood glucose (also called blood sugar) level.)

Delicious smashed sweet potatoes with garlic, butter and cheese. Click on the picture for the recipe.

I’ll keep you up to date on my progress with the diet. I also have a guest staying with me who I have on the Keto Diet. I’m doing better than her because she is, ahem, cheating a wee bit. But I’m slowly converting her so time will tell.

Enjoy these pictures of our trip and please comment.

I Tried The Golden Milk Recipe For Insomnia

I tried the Golden Milk recipe for insomnia, by Terry Ryan

Ah yes, the Golden Milk…its name derived from the yellow color from the focus ingredient, turmeric. (Also know as Golden Tea!). I believe I saw the recipe on Facebook sponsored by the Paleo Mom.

Follow me on Twitter.com/mslakegeorge

I looked up several other sites that had the Golden Milk recipe and some were slightly different. I decided to go with Paleo Mom’s because it was the first one I saw and well, looked good so let’s give it a try.

Who is it for?

If you have insomnia, you may want to check this recipe out. I have suffered with insomnia for years…should say HAD suffered. It no longer is a monkey on my back.

Check out my book: How I Kicked Insomnia to The Curb

Occasionally, I will have a short bout of insomnia; but nothing as bad as not being able to sleep for days in a row. But sometimes, I have a difficult time falling asleep or waking up in the wee hours of the morning wide awake. I will admit, in times of stress when I really need a good night sleep, and I am having an insomnia spell, I will take an Ambien, a prescription sleeping pill. But the hopes of finding a NATURAL REMEDY got my interest, so I tried the Golden Milk.

The 7 ingredients are: (You don’t have to run around. Purchase all the ingredients by clicking on the links below through Amazon. They are affiliate links so I do get a couple of pennies when you order this way. Keeps the web site up and running.

I wrote down the list and briskly determined what I had and had not in my pantry and off the to the grocery store I went.

I used Organic Turmeric spice
Organic cinnamon spice
Organic Coconut Oil I found at Trader Joe’s
McCormick whole peppercorns
Organic fresh ginger root that I had purchased at the local organic farm (Jessica’s located in Sarasota)
Stevia…sugar substitute youcan pu rchase in any grocery store now

The procedure…

Take 1/2 cup of water and put in a saucepan on med heat. Add 1/4 cup of turmeric. Cook down until you have a turmeric paste. Spoon into a spare jar you have saved from the last time you used pasta sauce. You can store this in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. This is the hardest part (after you have shopped for all the ingredients).

Health Blog Terry Ryan

I sprinkled more cinnamon on top.

Now take a saucepan, add 2 cups coconut milk (for the purpose of full disclosure, I used organic almond milk which is fine), 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1 tsp of coconut oil, 1 tsp of chopped ginger, 4 to 6 whole peppercorns, and 1 teaspoon of the turmeric paste. Simmer that all together for about 5 mins, then strain into two mugs and add a packet of Stevia for sweetness…but I bet a spoonful of raw honey would be good too!

I shared this concoction with my better half, and we both liked it. The turmeric wasn’t overwhelming and the ginger and cinnamon gave it a nice taste.

ZZZZzzzzzzz   And…I slept like a baby. Deep sleep like back when you were 10 years old and it’s snowing outside and you’re snuggled under a down comforter. Must admit, I had some wild dreams but not sure that was related to the Golden Milk.

The science behind all the ingredients: (All the ingredients must be used for the formula to work. Oh and take before bedtime.)

Turmeric fights inflammation. See my post on turmeric HERE

Ginger offers strong antioxidant capacity and has similarly enjoyed a long history of use in folk medicine where it is traditionally used to ease stomach upset or to ease the symptoms of colds.

Cinnamon is one of the most beneficial spices on earth, giving it antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, anti-microbial, immunity-boosting, cancer and heart disease-protecting abilities.

Peppercorns contain a good amount of minerals like potassium, calcium, zinc, manganese, iron, and magnesium.

Coconut oil help provide your body with the necessary building blocks to manufacture sleep hormones.

Stevia is just for taste. A natural sweetener.

I have read reviews and I think the Millennials were protesting about all the ingredients/steps. Millennials are forever in a hurry and simmering something in a saucepan isn’t their idea of a good time. However, and to my surprise, I found this in the heath food store.  Just a couple teaspoons in water and hocus pocus…Golden Milk. Do I think this will work as well as making it from scratch?  Probably not, but if you hate the idea off mixing up all the ingredients, then give this a try. Click here to purchase.

Cure Cancer With The Hallelujah Diet? by Terry Ryan

[hupso]

Cure Cancer With The Hallelujah Diet? by Terry Ryan

My neighbor claims the Hallelujah Diet saved her uncle who had cancer of the eye, and that’s how I first heard about the mysterious diet. Hmmm, a diet that saved a person from cancer. I had to learn more.

Googling the Hallelujah Diet, I found out there where many sites supporting and selling products related to the diet. It is a plant based diet with a religious association developed by Rev. George Malkmus from Glens Falls, NY. He was diagnosed with colon cancer in 1976 at the age of 42. He decided to go on a raw vegetable diet and drink lots of fresh carrot juice instead of the traditional route of chemotherapy/radiation. And in a year, he was cured of colon cancer.

It is also called God’s Ultimate Diet. Why? Genesis 1:29 I Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.” Therefore, they believe that God’s diet is a vegetarian diet; 80% raw and 20% cooked vegetables.

A few weeks ago in Sarasota, FL, I read an flyer advertising an informational meeting about the Hallelujah Diet. I went and about 30 people were in the room. The hosts, Mr.and Mrs Dave and Sherry Orcutt started the meeting by relating their story of ailing health and weight problems that they were able to cure with the Hallelujah diet. By the enthusiastic participation of the other people in the room, they were obviously already on the diet and had their own remarkable miracle cures.

From what I understood, there are Hallelujah Diet Retreats you can attend for intensive diet guidance. The speakers said they had closed their retreat, and were focusing on giving informational lectures and selling health products on their site, www, edenwellness, com.

In the room, was a long table with products you could purchase along with a juicer extractor and health books. I purchased the book “The China Study” by The Campbells. An excellent health book that I am halfway through. The back cover reads:

By any measure, America’s health is failing. We spend far more per capita, on health care then any other society in the world, and yet two/thirds of Americans are overweight, and more than 15 million have diabetes. We fall prey to heart disease as often as we did 30 years ago. Etc….

Back to the meeting, the hosts said that according to the First Testament, humans lived to the ripe old age of 900!!!  What!? That it wasn’t until humans started clogging their systems with animal meat, that our health started to drastically decline and our age expectancy dropped to under 100. Wow!  This was all news to me.

For 1,500 years after creation, men lived such long lives that most were either contemporaries of the first man, Adam, or personally knew someone who was! The ten patriarchs (excluding Enoch) who preceded the Great Flood lived an average of 912 years. Lamech died the youngest at the age of 777, and Methuselah lived to be the oldest at 969. See table 1.

8 Methuselah 969 Genesis 5:27
9 Lamech 777 Genesis 5:31
10 Noah 950 Genesis 9:29

During the 1,000 years following the Flood, however, the Bible records a progressive decline in the life span of the patriarchs, from Noah who lived to be 950 years old until Abraham at 175 (see figure 1 and table 2). In fact, Moses was unusually old for his time (120 years) because, when he reflected on the brevity of life, he said: “The days of our lives are seventy years; and if by reason of strength they are eighty years, yet their boast is only labor and sorrow; for it is soon cut off, and we fly away” (Psalm 90:10).
